EL GORDO DURIFF 2005 £9.99 / £119.88

"El Gordo means 'the fat one' - add big, dense, thick-set, rough-hewn to 'fat', and I'll drink to that. Durif is a beast in any case, rarely tamed, but these guys have just about managed it - the tannic chunkiness well matched by rich black plum syrup, herbs, eucalyptus and mint" Oz Clarke (Oz Clarke Wine Buying Guide Winning Wines 2008)

PONDALOWIE MT TEMPRANILLO 2005 £14.99 / £179.88

PENGUIN WINE AWARDS 2006 “BEST OTHER REDS AND BLENDS TOP AWARD”

“For sheer gluggability and hedonistic pleasure we loved this wine. Young it may be; straightforward it may be; unwooded, too; but it’s an object lesson in how to produce a delicious fruit-driven young red.” The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide. MT stands for ‘minha terra’, a Portuguese expression vignerons use to describe individual plots. The ‘terra’ in question here is their Pondalowie vineyard, near Bendigo. ’Rating 92 This gorgeous, generous, warm-hearted red is arguably the truest varietal Australian expression yet of the great Spanish red grape; plush, blackcherry richness floods the mouth, lifted by an alluring, spiced fruit cake complexity. Delicious now – but also worth cellaring for a couple of years.’ Max Allen, Decanter Magazine “Undiscovered Wines

TURNERS CROSSING SHIRAZ VIOGNIER 2006 £16.99 / £203.88

Here’s the brand new vintage of Turners Crossing Shiraz Viognier. We picked up quite a following for this little known (outside of Bendigo and the fine wine restaurants of Sydney) yet classic Shiraz Viognier blend when we first introduced the 2005 vintage to the UK (the recipient of a very high 94 point rating from no less than James Halliday) We will let the press do the talking on the fantastic new 2006 vintage release- a vintage which has just one catch; that is, we have a mere 25 cases arriving and we will sell out.  “Crimson-purple; a strikingly opulent wine, the 95% Shiraz/5% Viognier doing all the talking, with a rippling cascade of black fruits and almost powdery but persistent ripe tannins; maturation in older oak exactly the right call. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. Rating 95 points Drink now to 2021” James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion  “Super stylish. Deliciousness plus. It’s roasted and spicy, blackberried and chocolatey, and while it’s got a good amount of sweet fruit impact it’s also savoury and grainy and, dare I say it, classy. Dry, lengthy, A-grade tannins and a good balance between straight-out flavour and complexity. Fantastic wine. 94 Points; “ Campbell Mattinson  “It may not be the most fashionable region in Victoria, but for sheer depth and generosity of flavour, Bendigo takes a bit of a beating. The current available Turners Crossing reds are absolute crackers; it’s never easy to capture such lovely rich, ripe grape flavours within such perfectly poised and polished structures, but this winery does it with rare aplomb. In this case, the 5 per cent Viognier adds an intriguing tang of apricot and sweet spice to the essential blackberry flavour of the shiraz. Genuine lipsmacker. 5 Stars * * * * * Paddy Kendler  'Exceptional -just classy, bargain based stuff. Drink: Now-2016; Quality: Exceptional’; WineStar
“It looked good on opening. It looks even better after 24 hours. Such an evolution means that the news is all good when it comes to this cracking Shiraz Viognier. Perfectly ripe, fragrant, dusty, with savoury dark cherry/choc flavours and a long, powdered tannin finish, this is a hugely enjoyable wine.. Love the old oak influence (or lack of it) and every mouthful was a pleasure Drink: 2009-2015; 94 Points;” The Wining Pro

PRIMO ESTATE ANGEL GULLY SHIRAZ 2007 £27.99 / £335.88

Exceptional vintage for this rare release dry-grown Shiraz

Angel Gully Vineyard, situated in the McLaren Vale subregion of Clarendon is a magical spot creating a stand alone wine. Only released in outstanding vintages, it is made from a tiny, lowly cropped parcel of dry-grown vines on the highest point of the vineyard. 2007 is the first release after a two vintage absence. A classic dry vintage which yielded just one tonne per acre of pristine, concentrated fruit. Angel Gully’s combination of cool evenings, deep shale stone soils and naturally low yields imparts spicy peppery notes, concentrated dark fruit characters and a lasting minerality on the palate. A small portion of the fruit was air dried after picking to provide an additional degree of complexity. The hand picked fruit was crushed directly into traditional open-topped fermenters then manually pumped over. Winemaker Jo Grilli declares: ‘The soul of a red wine is released where air meets the fermenting skins’. It spends 18 months in the finest oak. The 2009 International Wine Challenge awarded this a coveted Gold Medal.'Lovely complex nose of black fruit, basil and tobacco. Dense, chewy, rich and fruit driven palate. Good structure, sweet tannins and long finish.' Drink now, you can but its magnificent to 2020

WILLIAM DOWNIE GIPPSLAND PINOT NOIR 2008 £39.99 / £479.88

“My favourite was probably the 2008 Gippsland Pinot which in its flavour sits between the other two. The outstanding feature, though, is the silkiness of the tannins which provides a lovely finish to this wine. A new Bass Phillip in the making?” Campbell Mattinson. Drink 2012 – 2019. This is very Gevrey-Chambertin or Nuits-St-George in style but think only of the very best producers

WILLIAM DOWNIE MORNINGTON CRESCENT PINOT NOIR 2008 £39.99 / £479.88

Beautiful regional flavours, darker, black cherry even blackberry toned fruit and a lesson in how impact can be completely different from weight, how intensity is not the same as density. Things really start to get interesting through the after palate, where the wine's structure opens out and promises even more flavoursome times ahead - deeper registers start to emerge. Drink 2010- 2016. A big Pinot Noir but it carries very well.

WILLIAM DOWNIE YARRA VALLEY PINOT NOIR 2008 £39.99 / £479.88

Bright red colour - classic Yarra - not too dark. 'The nose has lots of youthful fruit with plum and raspberry to the fore.  Fruit aromas are underpinned with spice and earth. The palate is tightly wrapped at the moment but unfolds with time in the glass. Fine boned and long, the wine will reveal itself over the next 12 months.' Drink 2010-2015
